Cleveland Chapter

The Cleveland Oldtimers

 

The Cleveland Old Timers Club was founded in 1965 by Earle Brown. Earl, having lived in Baltimore, Maryland, was contacted once the National Old Timers Basketball League was established. Cleveland was the sixth Chapter to enter the National Old Timers basketball League.

The Cleveland Old Timers’ ultimate goal is to provide a community service by either donating or participating in fundraising endeavors for charitable organizations. Emphasis is stressed for the members of the Old Timers Clubs to also serve as role models for the youth aspiring to excel in the field of athletics and life.

Charter members of the Cleveland Chapter were William “Pop” Jones, Charles Hall, James Thomas, Marion Motley, Harrison Dilliard, Melvin Mitchell, Curtis Golston, Frank Fields, Wally Edwards, *Larry Hollin, Ted Lovelace, *Creed Williams, Billy Hollin, Rick Johnson, Prince Smith, and Earle Brown.

The National Old Timers Basketball League expanded and consisted of the following cities/chapters: Atlantic City, New Jersey, Akron, Ohio, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Ashbury Park, New Jersey, Baltimore, Maryland, Brooklyn, New York, Cleveland, Ohio, Columbus, Ohio, Columbia City, Maryland, Dayton, Ohio, Newark, New Jersey, New York, New York, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. The Cleveland Chapter competed in the National Old Timers Basketball League from 1965 to May 1988.

In June of 1988 the Cleveland Chapter, along with Akron, Ohio, Allegheny, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Maryland, Columbus, Ohio, Dayton, Ohio, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seceded from the National Old Timers League and formed the American Old Timers Basketball League. New chapters entering the basketball league were: Cincinnati, Ohio, Trotwood, Ohio, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Detroit, Michigan, Westerville, Ohio, Kenwood, Ohio, and Shaker Heights, Ohio. Since 1986 the Cleveland Old Timers has provided assistance to several students attending college and supports both Cuyahoga Community College and Cleveland State University Athletic Programs.

In 1994, the Cleveland, Ohio chapter added Shaker Heights under the banner of Cleveland Old Timers, thus forming two basketball teams in Cleveland, Ohio. During the 1995-96 season both teams advanced to the championship game where Cleveland defeated Shaker Heights to win the Championship.

Columbus OH Chapter

Columbus Oldtimers

The Columbus Old Timers was founded by Charles Pleasants & Walter Nesbett in the year 1964. They joined the National Old Timers in 1965. The original members were as follows; Charles Pleasants, Walter Nesbett, Preston Harris, Art Broadnax, Rahleigh Harris, Robert Harriston, Don Paige and Romeo Watkins.

Columbus Old Timers were a member of the National Old Timers until 1988, when a dispute arose and a split in allegiance caused the birth of The American Old Timers. In the same year as the split the members of the AOT were as follows: Akron, OH; Baltimore, MD; Cleveland, OH; Columbus, OH; Dayton, OH; Harrisburg ,PA: Pittsburgh ,PA; Cincinnati, OH; Shaker Heights, OH and Alleghney, PA.

Since the year of 2012, The Columbus Old Timers have an annual Lock In every year held on Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend to help keep kids off the streets. During this time there are many activities that are held to educate the residents of the community. Guest speakers come to Sawyer Rec Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The Columbus Old Timers have won two Championships under the tutelage of Mr. Tommie Battle during the 2009-2010 season and then again in the 2012-2013 season.

The current President of the Columbus Old Timer’s is James Summerall.

Detroit MI Chapter

The Detroit Oldtimers

The Detroit Old Timers Chapter was formed in 1991 and joined the American Old Timers Clubs Inc. (AOT), the same year. The Founder was Earl Dixon who was also the first President, along with John Bernard as the first Vice President and Dennis Coleman as first Treasurer. Although all players were at least 40 years of age that first year, Detroit competed in the 35 and Over or Open Division.

Earl Dixon, the President, is a Hall of Fame Inductee at Eastern Michigan University. John Bernard, the Vice President, is a Hall of Fame member of the St. Cecilia Summer Pro League in Detroit and also Warren De La Salle High School. Dennis Coleman, the Treasurer, was the owner of Five Burger King Restaurants. All three were members who played in the AOT All Star Games.

AOT won four Legend Championships in a row in the 45 and Over Division. Earl later became the Second President of the American Old Timers Clubs Inc. following the retirement of Joe Wise. Following Earl’s retirement, the Detroit Old Timers became the Metro Detroit Old Timers with Rodney Bragg as the President.

The Detroit Chapters have had sixteen championship teams spread across all divisions with John Bernard either playing or coaching in eleven of those teams. Today Rodney Bragg is leading the teams with John Bernard serving on the Executive Board.

Westerville OH Chapter

Westerville Old Timers Club ,Inc.

The WOT was founded by Jeff Jones in 1993 after unreconcileable differences with the Columbus Oldtimers. At that time the officers were as follows: Pres. Lawrence Johns, 1st V.P. Jeff Williams, Sec.
James Harris, Treas. Timothy Ingram, Bus.mgr. Ronald Palmore,Tour Mgr.Rick Smith, Sgt At Arms.Larry
Jones, Chaplain. Fred Saunders.

Westerville has reach the final four every year accept two (2) since since joining the American Oldtimers.
they have participated in six (6) Championship games and became Ledgends Division champions once (1), in 2010.
The Westerville Old timers has awarded two (2) educational scholarships every year since 1995,in the amount of $250.00 each. WOT is strongly committed “to helping youth today for a better tomorrow”

It is noted that Ronald Palmore has been elected to the office of Bus.Mgr. every year since 1993, and was elected President in 2011. He is the only person to ever be elected two offices at the same time for WOT
